Nick Hahn had a great little piece on some obscure (but important) Reagan history at the American Spectator today. Hahn writes of the special relationship between Reagan and Bill Wilson, America's first ambassador (since 1867) to the Vatican. Hahn reveals that the Reagan administration pressed the issue of finally establishing an official diplomatic relationship with the Papal State. He maintains (as many others have) that the resulting relationship between Reagan and Pope John Paul II helped to save Poland's Solidarity Movement, and increase pressue upon the USSR--ultimately bringing down the "evil empire."
